ABSTRACT

While much progress has been made toward understanding fusion plasmas, the fundamental difficulty of controlling the transport of energy and particles and thereby allowing the conditions for sustained fusion to occur still exists. In this talk we will discuss the issues and then a variety of techniques (with their physical mechanisms) for controlling the transport in the context of a "simple" 1-D transport model. This model is based on the interactions between sheared flows and the underlying turbulent transport that has been discussed in previous recent talks on the fundamental dynamics of turbulent transport in the presence of sheared flows. We will look at "real" techniques such as injecting pellets into the plasma, doing modulated RF heating etc, as control tools and will briefly discuss the issue of extrapolating these techniques forward to the next generation of devices (ITER for example). Questions about the recent progress and future are as always welcome.
